Skin glorious skin…

The one question I am asked all the time “what do I use on my skin?”

And to be honest this is great to hear because make up will only go so far. Make up is an easy quick fix to cover acne, blemish breakouts and dull skin but unless someone has a regular and healthy skin care routine it’s all for nothing. I’ve had a few situations at the moment where people have been asking about products for their skin, especially young girls and with prom season looming… There’s no better time to give you some handy hints.

First of all lets get technical… Skin naturally produces oil, it doesn’t produce water. Hence why we are urged to drink lots of water and use lotions and potions on our skin. When a skin has an excess of oil 9 times out of 10 it’s due to skin being dehydrated. In our climate of cold weather and central heating it’s no surprise! So ask yourself these questions..

1. Do I have an oily t zone or do I shine all over?
2. Does my skin feel tight without moisturiser ?

If a skin has blemishes and shines were made to think we have an oily skin… If we have flaky, sore skin we have dry skin. What if we have a blemish proned, shiny, dry skin? What if we have both? Well apparently that’s combination… a word I thoroughly hate. A combination skin is basically a dehydrated skin and is so common. Because we can not naturally produce water in the skin it goes in to overdrive. Producing excess oil to comfort the skin which causes excess oil and blemish breakouts. Skin can change so quickly especially for a women… Time of the month am I right?? So no matter whether your skin is oily or dry it is always a good idea to keep up its hydration and balance.

1. Cleaning….

Clean skin is where it all starts. If you’re skin is not clear from the daily dirt and oil that settles on the surface nothing else will make an impact. Make sure you use a cleanser that works with your skin type. There are loads of cream cleansers out there that come with cloths which make a massive difference. The exfoliating cloth gives an extra deep cleanse, opening and unclogging pores. Using water to cleanse the skin can actually have a dehydrating effect so make sure you use a cleanser that will replace this hydration. A lot of spot prone cleaners (I won’t name names but you know who you are) work by drying out excess oil causing break outs on the skin. In the long run these strip the skin leaving it totally dehydrated and dry. It’s a vicious circle, drier skin, more oil, more blemishes…. Making sense now?
Now you know I all rave about the Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser and I think for the price it’s value for money. However there are so many out there. Let’s budget….

5. Chanel Sublimage Comfort cleanser £69
4. Elemis pro-collagen cleansing balm £39.50
3. Clarinet pure melt cleansing gel £20
2. Liz Earle Hot cloth cleanser £15.50
1. Peaches and clean wash off deep puryfing cleanser £8

No these don’t go in range of most expensive is better but it just shows what a range of cleanser there are no matter what your budget!

Balancing…

There are a lot of items out there that can help balance the ph in your skin, oil levels and dryness. Masks, toners, exfoliations night oils LOADS!! Puts knowing what you need. If you have oily (and I mean oily not dehydrated 😉) these little beauties are rescue remedies…

5. Chanel tonique for oily skin £27
4. Origins spot remover £15
3. Lush Magnaminty face mask/exfoliator £9.75
2. Good things deep clean blackhead exfoliator £4.99
1. Bowl of hot water, tea tree oil, towel… See where I’m going?? £0

And for those dry skin saviours…

5. Chanel sublimage masque £145
4. Elements pro collagen marine cream £99
3. Clarins Blue Orchid oil £33
2. Garnier moisturise match for dry skin £4.99
1. Good things manuka honey scrub £4.99

Birthday blog!

Hello!! Finding excuses like sitting in the back garden and sunbathing on this glorious day to actually sit down and write a blog! Other excuses include some of the glorious bits and bobs I got for my birthday!

IMG_4193.JPG

Starting with the lush Lush (see what I did there 😉) products I got! I’ve always been a massive fan of Lush, just walking past the shop makes my mouth water. But their philosophy of all natural is all best has me a bit skeptical. However, I got the Enchanted eye cream and Imperialus face cream and so far so good. The moisturiser has a familiar smell that I can’t put my finger on and a gorgeous light texture. It leaves my skin feeling very supple and plump! (Which may not sound like a good thing but take it from me skin that feels like paper is not good!) my skin generally looks brighter and more even in tone and it doesn’t leave me shiny. Down side is for nighttime I want something richer and the pot leaks…. Which makes travelling with it in an overnight bag interesting! The eye cream I can’t say I’ve seen a massive difference… But in saying that I’ve only used it for over a week and the texture and smell are pleasant. The size of it is also massive value for money! It would be a great eye cream for those looking to start using something to maintain good skin around the eye area. I saved the best product for last though…. The mask of magnaminty… This product is just gorgeous! Everything from the smell and sensation on the skin (due to it’s high amount of peppermint.) to how it hardens and scrubs off leaving that amazing fresh, clean feel to the disgustingly awesome green colour! This little pot of awesome can also be used on back breakouts!

No birthday would be complete without some Jo Malone 😊 as you know there is nothing I don’t like from that heavenly place and they proved me right again! Mum and dad bought me a gorgeous new (for me) scent English Pear and Fresia. For me I would have just walked past this one and oh my god I would be wrong to. The fresia doesn’t leave it intensly floral and the pear almost warms it up. I love warm scents; Pomegranate Noir, Coco (noir) etc and this little lovely has joined their ranks. Make sure to check out Jo Malone this Thursday for the launch of their new fragrance, body lotion and candle which I am extremely excited about! “Wood Sage and Sea Salt” might not sound like much but it’s spicy scent had me sniffing myself all day. The candle especially has heightened sage notes for that fragrant burn and had me imagining of warm Italian kitchens with a hunky italian man cooking me pasta… Yes I got all that from a candle. Just delicious.

Another exciting little beauty product I was lucky to have been presented with was the highly coveted Christian Louboutin nail lacquer!! This sensational new cosmetics has had every girl swooning because now everyone can have a little bit of the Louboutin magic. The 8 inch stem is in honour of the highest ever heal “The ballerina ultima” Mr. louboutin created. Two coats of this intense red is meant to give the effect of the 20 layers that is given to every shoe. However if my boyfriend (and this goes to all boys) thinks that buying this counts as buying me “Louboutins” he’s sorely mistaken.

So lucky me eh!? But a last little bit of info for all my favourite Lancôme ladies out there, I was recently enticed with their (as always) amazing gift with purchase. And as much as I am a product magpie I really cannot see past genifique. For me it’s like miracle serum. Even just having used it for the last 3 days I see the difference in the radiance in my skin. I’ve always said anti ageing starts with skins radiance and this is like the fountain of youth for skin. I was also suuuuper pleased to find a sample size of hypnose mascara which again I always try and find cheaper alternatives, (and end up finding the will to live as I loath mascara) I really should stop as it was like saying hello to an old friend using it this morning. Lancome’s gift with purchases are always really good and worth stocking up on old favourites for! And I can highly recommend the lovely ladies at boots Bon Accord to help you out with finding new favourites.

I had such a lovely birthday, (I know people always say that but I really did) I spent it with some of my favourite people, drank loooooads of champagne and laughed so hard my stomach hurt the next day. And these gifts I was lucky enough to receive we’re just a few of many. I really am such a lucky spoilt girl. ☺️.

As always please leave me comments on the Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/pages/StephMArtistry/175542622557392 ) for anything you’d like to see or ask me. Make sure to follow @stephmartistry for peaks into the life of an mua and have a wonderful week whatever you are doing! I have a special birthday celebration coming up Friday night so I might do my next blog on my make up for that occasion?? What do you think??

Until next time, ciao. x

Building a good foundation…

Hey everyone! Right about now my face has finally shifted from Quasimodo but sadly on to David Coultard. For those of you that didn’t know, I had my wisdom teeth removed on Monday. I’ve said it before but, I had so many people wishing me luck and a speedy recovery so, thank you again. To keep me from going around the twist I came up with heaps of things to keep me occupied which didn’t include taking pictures of my face! But honestly this is the first time I’ve felt like looking at a computer screen!! Fasting for 24 hours and having mouth surgery to remove significant teeth in chewing means it’s difficult to eat. Mix that with a load of medication and it leaves one a but out of sorts. However I am currently clutching my first cup of tea in 4 days… So I must be better!

But enough about me. As we move from season to season I love the transition of matte to dewy foundation! And I love a dewy foundation, Chanel vitalumiere was one of my all time favourites to use on customers, but on me foundations ALWAYS tend to go really shiny. Until now…

I first came across this foundation using it on a customer as her own foundation. Le teint touché éclat foundation from YSL gives a gorgeous dewy finish to the skin and wears really well, leaving a healthy glow all day. I tried this with a foundation brush and have to say I actually got a better finish using my fingers. It doesn’t have the same wet texture that other dewy foundations have which makes it lovely to use with just fingers. I still use a light dusting of powder to set my nose as this is what goes shiny first. I’ve been using shade B10 obviously the palest… But be warned I found this foundation darkened as it settled into the skin so if you do give this foundation a thought try before you buy!

But for those of you who are matte matte matte powder powder powder!! I have also discovered this…

20140417-081412.jpg

I have never felt a texture like this before in my life! And as much as, when it came to foundations, the dewy side had me hooked this brought me crawling back to the matte side!! It literally feels like as it says “air”. The completely weightless liquid foundation immediately dries to a matte finish leaving a completely invisible flawless finish. Lancome have really came up trumps with this little beauty and let’s face it, anything that could have me looking like Penelope Cruz jumps straight into my make up bag!

I have been on a little bit of a foundation frenzy and I stopped myself from purchasing this next little beauty so I was super chuffed when another MUA sister ,Chloe, purchased it and kindly told me all about it! The Make Up Forever HD foundation is huge in America at the moment and is a keen favourite in the likes of Kim Kardashian’s make up artist Mario’s make up kit. I’ve always been drawn in by its apparently flawless, full “HD” coverage. The highly talented Chloe has kindly allowed me to link her Facebook page so you can all have a read of what she thought on it. (Of which it is well worth.. I now also want this foundation… See face below… Why wouldn’t you??)

Whether you’re a matte or a dewy, full coverage or natural a good foundation is something you should spend your money on. Cheap lipglosses and eyeshadows will always do the job but there is nothing better than having healthy skin and I do believe this is where spending a bit more money comes in to play. People always ask my the What’s,Where and Whys of buying foundations and I would always say…

What; buy a foundation that matches your skin type. If your skin tends to have drier tendencies choose something with a dewy hydrating finish which will boost radiance and not stick to any drier areas. If you are more shiny stick to more variable matte coverages and finishes. Always remember though that heavier foundations can sometimes show up uneven skin more than a natural coverage… Concelear will be your saviour here!

Where; do your research! There are so many blogs you can troll through giving you amazing tips depending on your budget. Always sit down and trial the foundation with the consultant or if you are uncomfortable with this ask for a sample. Your foundation will darken and change in outside lights so it’s best to get a feel for it all over before you buy (you are visualising your drawer full of foundations right!) especially when purchasing something a bit more on the expensive side.

Why; test multiple colours. Foundations have different tones and seeing them next to each other can be helpful in eliminating what doesn’t match your skin. Consultants are trained to match skin tones and here is where I’m their worst customer. I prefer a more yellow based foundation to give me warmth because I am as pale as. So testing out the different shades will let you see what I mean by pink or yellow based. Try them in areas that have no interference to your natural colour such as in the inner arm and under the ear on your neck.

I always hope my blogs help in making your shopping trips less traumatic! And I’m always open to hearing suggestions if there are particular things you want to know. As always give the Facebook (StephMArtistry) I didn’t realise how tantalisingly close I am to 800 linkers which is beyond awesome! You can also follow @stephmartistry on twitter an Instagram for somemore rambling, BTS, selfies and all around MUA banter.

Until next time ciao! x

PRESENTS!!

It was my birthday this weekend… If none of you knew that… ( 🙂 )

And I thought I would share some of the gorgeous beauty buys I received as gifts!

20130819-171243.jpg

First in the picture, is one of my favourite scents in the world. Jo Malone pomegranate noir. This is such a feminine scent and is right up my street. Jo Malone describes this as a dark and enigmatic fragrance, with rich tones of pomegranate and raspberry. I love mustier, heavier scents. Makes me feel much more confident.

Next which was AMAZING was my new Lancôme moisturiser!! I love Lancome’s skincare, I’ve never felt a product that I haven’t loved. The hydra zen has a great rich texture for my dehydrated skin, an SPF to protect my skin and calming properties to protect me from my hectic lifestyle!!

And last but certainly not least is THEE red lipstick of all red lipsticks!! I am now the proud owner of my very own ruby woo!!!!!!

20130819-172216.jpg

I had a lovely weekend, three rounds of celebrating! But best of all high tea wearing my ruby woo!!

Love birthdays…

These are few of my favourite things…

I get asked all the time what I use and what’s best and being the make up junkie I am, it’s a question I can never answer. I love make up so I use a huge variety, sometimes things that do the exact same thing but because its different its my favourite that day! So… I thought I would start sharing every so often some of the things I’m loving at the moment.

I don’t always wear foundation, I think sometimes just as beautiful a result can be achieved without it and this little beauty makes that possible. (Left picture)

20130812-123616.jpg

It’s clinique’s pore minimiser. I think it’s fantastic. It works like a “poly filler” and gives the smoothest completion to the skin, filling in lines, pores and smoothing over drier areas which tend to clog make up. It also has a tint through it which helps to diminish any redness or uneven skin tone. If I am however wearing a foundation I am absolutely loving bourjois healthy mix serum and even more so the concealer! It gives a lovely overall coverage which blends easily into the skin. It’s semi matte (which is big for me because I like matte) and when I say semi I mean my skin is matte but still incredibly bright. My next big make up must have at the moment is my lashes! I HATE my lashes, they are really long but incredibly sparse and straight. Everything makes them look spidery and clumpy. So when I went on a mascara mission and found a mascara that claims to be non clumping… I didn’t believe it. But I take it all back, it’s max factor and its amazing and paired with my new vintage eye lash curlers, I say it was mission successful.

So all this make up is great but if my skin isn’t great it’s all for nothing. I’ve worked with many expensive moisturisers and skin products and I can honestly say some work and some work but not any differently than an in expensive moisturiser. However I do love a good serum and none are better than Lancome’s Genifique and now that it has a new advanced formula… It has me squirming! The lovely ladies gave me a wee sample and I must say I love it. It really does make my skin so much brighter. The first sign of ageing is dull and tired skin and its the one thing I would pay money to prevent. Lines and wrinkles will come. If not, you’ve not lived your life (she says at the ripe age of 23 years and 360 days 🙂 ) but dull and tired skin can be rectified and make a huge difference to your makeup. The Genifique comes in a whole skin care range, go see the lovely ladies at Lancôme and let them tell you all about it.

20130812-123822.jpg

And lastly hair! I’m not big on nails but I do LOVE good hair. I was recently given a sample of matrix exquisite oil by the lovely Julie from JS Hair in Fochabers. It works as a hot oil that you comb through the tips of your hair working your way to the roots. And my hair felt like silk! I do take care of my hair so it wasn’t a necessity for me but I still felt a difference in the condition. I love good hair but I love big hair better and batiste finally have a dry shampoo for dark brown hair! I know they have the brown hairspray it I still felt it was too grey..this goes on brown! It gives a really nice full blown out finish to the roots without having to back comb your hair. For me it’s a must have. They now also have one for red heads too. No more grey roots!
